Instructor John Nicholas Rund (Nick) is a seasoned martial artist with a deep commitment to the study and mastery of Kenpo. With a solid foundation in this dynamic martial art, he has developed a profound appreciation for its techniques, philosophies, and rich history. Kenpo, known for blending traditional movements with modern self-defense strategies, is a true passion for Instructor Rund.
Instructor Rund earned his Black Belt and 1st Degree Black Belt under the mentorship of 5th Degree Black Belt Arlo Kane and 4th Degree Black Belt Christopher Johnson. He continues to train and teach under the guidance of Marty Martin, an 8th Degree Black Belt and Associate Master of the Arts in Kenpo, who also promoted both Associate Professor Kane and Senior Instructor Johnson. Master Martin himself was promoted to his 3rd, 4th, and 5th Degree Black Belts by Ed Parker and received his 6th, 7th, and 8th Degree Black Belts from Al Tracy.
Marty Martin has been certified to teach Kenpo Karate since 1969. Over the years, he has adapted the teaching and structure of Kenpo to reflect societal changes and advancements in physical sciences. Today, his style of Kenpo incorporates elements of Western boxing, American kickboxing, and Jiu-Jitsu, while maintaining Kenpo’s core focus on self-defense.
Kenpo’s roots can be traced back to ancient Chinese martial arts, particularly Shaolin Kung Fu, before it evolved in Japan and later in Hawaii. In Hawaii, James Mitose, a Japanese-American, refined Kenpo and introduced it to the Western world. Mitose’s teachings greatly influenced Ed Parker, often regarded as the father of American Kenpo. Parker modernized and popularized Kenpo throughout the United States, shaping it into a practical self-defense system.
Instructor Rund’s lineage is closely connected to Al Tracy, a pivotal figure in Kenpo’s history who trained directly with Ed Parker. Al Tracy’s approach preserved the essence of traditional Kenpo while emphasizing adaptability and real-world effectiveness. Under the mentorship of figures like Marty Martin, who trained with the Tracy Brothers, Instructor Rund has been able to carry forward these timeless techniques and philosophies, integrating them into his own distinctive teaching style.
As a dedicated instructor, John Nicholas Rund is committed to sharing the art of Kenpo with his students, focusing on both the physical techniques and the underlying philosophy of self-discipline, respect, and personal growth. By blending tradition with modern applications, he honors Kenpo’s rich lineage while inspiring a new generation of martial artists.
