  1. Panel 1. Race day! 3 Dragons Dojo vs. the Shadow Claw Clan.

Marshall explains that the first entire team across the finish wins. He stands with his four young students opposite Bad Badger and the six masked members of the Shadow Claw Clan.

Marshall: “First WHOLE team across wins. Nobody left behind!”

  2. Panel 2. Badger has a sneaky shortcut to trouble.

Badger whispers to the purple-sash tortoise: sneak ahead to the sign, point it left for the Dragons, then right for the clan.

Bad Badger: “Psst! Purple sash—sneak to the sign. LEFT for them. RIGHT for us!”

  3. Panel 3. Before anyone says GO, the purple-sash tortoise sneaks ahead.

Before Marshall gives the start signal, the purple-sash tortoise crouches and tiptoes behind bushes, glancing back as it sneaks toward the sign. Everyone else waits at the start. The arrow still points right.

  1. Panel 4. NOW the race begins!

The four students sprint ahead of three hares and two tortoises. The purple-sash tortoise is already farther up the course.

    Marshall: “Ready... set... GO!”

  2. Panel 5. One sneaky spin: the arrow points LEFT.

The purple-sash tortoise steps out of its hiding place and spins the orange arrow left around the single nail in its center. The bridge to the finish is on the right.

  3. Panel 6. Four Dragons take the wrong turn.

All four students follow the left-pointing arrow into the garden path. The tortoise watches from behind a bush.

Girl deer: “The sign says left. Stick together!”

  4. Panel 7. All four kids pass. The tortoise flips the arrow RIGHT again.

After all four students pass, the tortoise pivots the same arrow around its center nail, pointing it back toward the right-hand bridge. The other five clan members approach.

  1. Panel 8. A hedge! Definitely not the finish.

A hedge blocks the garden path. The girl deer turns all four students back toward the fork.

Girl deer: “Dead end! Turn back—together!”

  2. Panel 9. Panda trips. Fox won't leave a friend behind.

The panda stumbles over a root. Fox stops and gives Panda a hand up.

Fox: “Got you! No panda left behind!”

  3. Panel 10. Now Panda returns the favor.

Panda lifts a low branch so Otter can duck beneath it. Panda says 'Duck, Otter!' and Otter jokes, 'Still an otter!' as the two help each other along.

    Panda: “Duck, Otter!”

    Otter: “Still an otter!”

  4. Panel 11. Back at the fork. Back as a team.

At the fork, the girl deer checks that Fox, Panda, and Otter are with her. All four take the bridge route.

Girl deer: “One, two, three, four. All here! Take the bridge!”

  1. Panel 12. Meanwhile, all six ninjas race onto the bridge.

Meanwhile, while the Dragons retrace the garden path, the purple-sash lookout joins the other five clan members. All six race ahead along the bridge.

  2. Panel 13. One foot gets stuck. Five teammates keep going.

The blue-sash tortoise catches a foot between two bridge planks. The other five keep running and leave their teammate behind.

Blue-sash tortoise: “Wait! My foot's stuck!”

  3. Panel 14. Five ninjas cross first... and celebrate too soon!

Three hares and two tortoises cross the finish and break the ribbon. The blue-sash tortoise is still back on the bridge.

  4. Panel 15. ...but five is NOT their whole team!

Marshall counts only five clan members. Badger realizes they left someone behind and orders the others to go back.

Marshall: “Five of six! Your whole team must finish.”

Bad Badger: “Where's my sixth ninja?! Go back!”

  1. Panel 16. Five ninjas rush back for number six.

The five clan members turn around and run back to the blue-sash tortoise.

  2. Panel 17. The Dragons lend a hand—and catch up!

Otter gives the girl deer a hand over an uneven plank. Fox and Panda stay close, and the four Dragons move ahead together while the clan goes back.

Otter: “Take my hand! We finish together!”

  3. Panel 18. The Dragons finish: four out of four!

Fox, Panda, Otter, and the girl deer cross the painted finish line together. All four Dragons have finished before the clan can bring its sixth racer across. Marshall declares 3 Dragons the first complete team and the winners.

Marshall: “All four are across! 3 Dragons wins!”

  4. Panel 19. Nobody left behind. That's a winning team.

The students gather beside Marshall. The girl deer stays focused, and Badger fumes apart from the group. The Dragons won by helping every teammate finish.

Marshall: “Now THAT'S how a team wins!”

Bad Badger: “Teamwork?! I didn't plan for THAT!”

How did the 3 Dragons win?

Badger’s lookout sneaked away before the start signal. After the race began, it spun the arrow around its center nail to send the Dragons down a dead-end path, then pointed it right for the clan after all four kids passed. As they returned, Fox helped Panda up, Panda lifted a branch for Otter, and the girl deer checked that everyone was together. Meanwhile, the clan left its blue-sash tortoise stuck on the bridge. The other five crossed first, but five out of six was not a whole team! They had to go back. Otter gave the girl deer a hand over an uneven plank, and all four Dragons caught up and crossed together. Every teammate counted.
